Caiman lizards do spend a lot of time in water and mainly eat snails in the wild. They were considered to be really hard to keep in captivity, but captive bread specimens are becoming more commend and they do much better in captivity than wild caught ones. In fact in some countries caiman lizards are protected by law and it might not be legal to catch one for the pet trade.

They can inflict somewhat serious bites so care must be exercised if someone wishes to keep a caiman lizard as a pet. They also require a lot of space. Caiman lizards are considered to be smart for a reptile which might make them attractive to some would be owners.
