Tokay Gecko

The Tokay gecko is a large gecko from South-East Asia. Tokay geckos are nocturnal, they hunt at night. Tokay geckos eat insects and small vertebrates — unlike some other geckos that mainly live on fruit.

Tokay geckos are often kept as pets. In a terrarium they need an arboreal setup, daily misting to keep the humidity high and a warm tropical environment with usual reptilian equipment, including a basking spot and a water bowl.

Tokay geckos tend to be aggressive and will bite a human given a chance. Tokay geckos have strong jaws and sharp teeth — expect to be hurt if you get bitten by one. Some people do manage to tame them so they tolerate some handling, but be careful. Many captive bred color morphs are available in the pet trade to accommodate enthusiast, if one is into keeping these lizards.
