Mandarin Ducks

In Asian culture manadarin duck are a symbol for love and spousal fidelity. So it is a good thing that I have managed to take a picture of these two as a pair.

A pair of mandarin ducks (Aix galericulata) in the Indomalaya exhibit of the Toronto Zoo.

The male mandarin duck has a very colorful plumage and a red beak. The female mandarin duck has more modest colors and does not look like the male.

This pair of mandarin ducks were kept in the moat in front of the Malayan Tapir / Babirusa exhibit indoors.

In the wild mandarin ducks are doing well in spite of some habitat destruction in their native East Asia.
In fact feral populations of mandarin ducks, descended from animal that escaped captivity, are now living in the UK, Ireland and in the United States.
