The name babirusa comes from the Indonesian word meaning pig-deer. Babirusas are really skinny looking pigs — they are not deer.
Babirusas are native to Indonesia. Although formerly they were considered to be a single species now different variations are recognized as separate species.
I can only assume that it is a female, or a very young animal, from the lack of tusks. Male babirusas have very long tusks that curl backwards and if it is not worn down by the animal’s daily activity it can curl right back and pierce the animals own skull — kind of freakish.
